NORTHERN DAIRY EXPO 2014

Ingleview Gold Doll takes the Grand Championship

The shocking rain could do nothing to dampen the spirits of those attending the 32nd Northern Dairy Expo show held at Borderway Mart, Carlisle held on Friday evening 3rd October 2014. There was an excellent turn out of dairy animals for all to see and the sponsors of the show were out in force to present prizes and mingle with the farmers watching the show.

The judging was in the capable hands of Mr Hugh Neilson of “Overside” Holsteins, South Lanarkshire and the first class of the night was the young handlers, Hugh put the seven young competitors through their paces and eventually Eleanor Fisher, Skelton was placed first.

Then we moved onto the first of four young stock classes with an excellent number of animals in all, bolstered by the number of entries from Newton Rigg College farm, who as one of the joint main sponsors of the event had decided to also partake, with agricultural students from the college trying their hand in the show ring – many for the first time.

After some superb competition in these classes a tremendous line up came into the ring for the junior championship with the judge finally tapping out Shoreline Appleman Seaspray exhibited and bred by C and AJ Woodhouse, Millom, Cumbria. Reserve Junior Champion was awarded to JJ and GE Eastham, Preston with Samlea Bossman Summer and Honourable Mention went to Bestfed Windbrook Countess 3 from Messrs PD and BS Lawrence, Grange over Sands.

The pinnacle of the evening started with the senior cow classes and what they lacked in numbers they made up for in quality. After judging of the individual classes all the class winners were brought back into the ring to decide the Overall Grand Champion the grand finale of this tremendous night. The judge took his time and added to the tension but finally tapped out Ingleview Gold Doll as Overall Grand Champion, exhibited by our Chairman Mr R Butterfield and wife Elaine from Bentham this animal was a very worthy winner which also won “Best udder in show” and Best exhibitor bred animal- so well done to this cow and her owners. Reserve Champion went to Errolston Damion Ricki from Brian, Valerie and Craig Davidson from just across the border at Gretna. Honourable mention was taken by the Lawrence family with Holmland Lavanguard Pledge which was also awarded Champion Heifer in milk.

Newton Rigg College picked up a trio of awards winning the Genetic merit award, Premier Exhibitor award and Best New Exhibitor award making an excellent evening for the college.

Many thanks to all helped to make this evening go so well and to all the sponsors, exhibitors and committee for helping put on a most wonderful show.
